Celebrating MHFAider Day: Honouring the Impact of Mental Health First Aiders
By Lee Morris | Optimise Learning Ltd
12th November marks the inaugural MHFAider Day — a national day dedicated to recognising the vital contribution of Mental Health First Aiders (MHFAiders) across the UK. It’s a chance to celebrate those who create safe spaces for mental health conversations, support colleagues in times of need, and help build more compassionate workplaces.
What Is MHFAider Day?
MHFAider Day has been launched to highlight the impact of Mental Health First Aiders and to strengthen the community of people who have completed accredited MHFA England training. The day is about celebrating the dedication and difference MHFAiders make — from offering a listening ear to helping others access professional support when needed.
This initiative supports MHFA England’s mission to create workplaces where everyone can talk about mental health openly, safely, and without stigma.
“MHFAiders play a vital role in helping people access the right support before a crisis. MHFAider Day celebrates their ongoing contribution to building healthier workplaces.”
— MHFA England, 2025
My MHFAider Journey: Five Years of Training and Transformation
Over the past five years I’ve had the privilege of training hundreds of MHFAiders through Optimise Learning Ltd. Across sectors — schools, charities, SMEs and larger organisations — I’ve seen the ripple effect that MHFA training produces. The outcomes are varied, but they share a powerful common thread: real, human impact.
1. Emotive Conversations That Save Space — and Sometimes Lives
Many MHFAiders have told me that, after training, they felt equipped to have brave and compassionate conversations about sensitive topics such as suicide, self-harm, and depression. These conversations are often quiet and unassuming — a corridor check-in, a coffee-room “Are you okay?” — but they can open pathways to support and, in some cases, prevent harm.
2. The Power of Self-Awareness
Becoming an MHFAider often becomes a mirror for self-reflection. Trainees frequently report increased awareness of their own stress signals, better boundary-setting, and new approaches to self-care. This self-awareness can have a transformative effect on individual wellbeing and team resilience.
3. Everyday Conversations That Shape Culture
Some of the most impactful change comes from everyday moments — the ad hoc “water cooler” conversations where MHFAiders check in, listen, and respond with empathy. Over time, these small acts shift organisational culture: teams begin to normalise talking about mental health, and organisations start to embed wellbeing-focused activities such as World Mental Health Day, focus weeks, or internal peer-support networks.
Why MHFAider Day Matters
MHFAider Day recognises the quiet, consistent care MHFAiders offer. It’s also an opportunity for organisations to:
- Publicly thank and celebrate MHFAiders.
- Offer refresher training or short peer sessions to keep skills sharp.
- Share success stories that inspire others to step forward.
- Reconnect MHFAiders across departments to build stronger internal networks.
What I’m Doing for MHFAider Day
I will be delivering an open MHFA course on 11th and 12th November. Because I’m delivering that full course across those two days, I won’t be available to deliver short CPD or supervision sessions on MHFAider Day (12th November)as I would have liked.
If you were hoping to book a 60-minute CPD or co-coaching slot on 12th November, please get in touch and I’ll offer an alternative date or a short group session at a mutually convenient time.
Open MHFA Course (11th–12th November)
- Delivering a full, open Mental Health First Aid course across Monday 11th and Tuesday 12th November.
- If you or any of your MHFAiders would like a place on the open course, please contact me — limited spaces available.
- If you want a short MHFAider Day activity (e.g., a 60-minute refresher or co-coaching session), I can schedule alternative dates around the 12th — contact me to discuss options.
Final Thoughts
MHFAider Day is a timely reminder that mental health support is delivered not only through policy or programmes, but by people. Those who listen, check in, and start difficult conversations help create kinder, safer, more connected workplaces.
To everyone I’ve trained over the last five years — thank you. Your dedication changes lives and cultures.
If you’d like to book a place on the open MHFA course (11th–12th November), arrange an alternative CPD session, or celebrate MHFAider Day another way, please get in touch:
